Triathlon Coaching

Lloyd B IM Wales 70.3.jpg

The whole reason i got into cycling was through the sport of triathlon so it only seems fitting that we coach triathletes too.

The demands of the sport are closely related to cycling and many of the fundamental training  principles apply, albeit there are some key differences.

For Triathlon the goal is optimal performance across three sports, finished with a run. Training is an exercise in energy management, neuromuscular specificity, and fatigue resistance. The focus is on achieving the best sum of three performances, not a maximal performance in any one.

A triathlete's schedule is a complex jigsaw puzzle. A cyclist's schedule by comparison is about progressively overloading one activity.

Take Lloyd to our left here. I was coaching Lloyd purely from a cycling perspective until earlier this year he suggested that he wanted to have a go at a triathlon, with the main goal being the Ironman Swansea 70.3.

Clearly Lloyd had a solid base of fitness from his cycling, and given he used to play rugby he was no stranger to running.  We just needed to bring his swim up to a decent level, mainly so he didn't get out of the water feeling completely shattered before he had a chance to show what he was capable in the other two disciplines.

To cut a long story short Lloyd having only done one Olympic triathlon as a warm up for this event managed to complete the course in a time of 5:07:49.

This placed him 27th in his category and 159th overall - this put him firmly in the top 10%.

Regardless of whether you are new to triathlon or you've been doing them for many years, we can still help elevate your performance and smash your previous bests.
