Lactate Testing Now Available

Lactate Threshold Testing Essex, Lactate Test Essex

Take your training to the next level with lactate threshold testing to clearly define your ideal training intensity zones.

Not everyone will produce power in the same way.

In the world of endurance sports it's not necessarily the athlete who has the biggest engine (Vo2 max) that will be on the top step but likely the athlete who is the most efficient.

  • What is Lactate Threshold Testing

Lactate threshold testing measures the point at which blood lactate levels begin to increase exponentially during exercise.

  • How it's performed

The test involves exercising at increasing intensities while taking blood samples to measure lactate concentration. The test usually starts at a low intensity and progresses slowly, with most people completing six to eight stages before exhaustion.

  • What it measures

Lactate is a by-product of burning fuel (glygogen) in the muscles, and the harder you work, the more lactate your body produces. Lactate threshold is usually measured in millimoles per liter of blood (mmol/L).

  • What it indicates

Lactate threshold is a better predictor of performance than VO2max and a better indicator of exercise intensity than heart rate.

  • How to prepare

Usually no test preparation is needed, but it’s usually best practice to conduct the test at least a couple of hours after you have last consumed any food or calorific drinks.

  • What exercise modes to use

Treadmill running and cycling ergometry are popular, Endurance-trained athletes should be tested using the exercise that most closely resembles their competitive events.

  • How to interpret the results

An athlete's lactate curve shifts over time depending on their training focus and physiological state. These shifts can help you decide what energy systems to train and which races to focus on.
